The field of photography is growing everyday. It takes someone that can see the world in a different light to truly stand out. We got a chance to meet a young photographer to see what makes him tick and what inspires his work today.
For those who aren’t familiar with you or your work, introduce yourself to the Casual Friday community.
My name is Daniel Stewart, more commonly known as dannyphoto, and I’m a photographer based in Chicago.
What camera do you use to shoot?
For digital I’m currently using a Canon 5D Mark IV. For my film photography I use a Mamiya 645AF and a Mamiya RB67.
Do you prefer film or digital?
I prefer film over digital, easily. But digital is best for client work/branded content unless they explicitly want it on film.
Who inspired you to get into photography?
To be honest, nobody inspired me to get into photography. I started it because I loved cars and wanted to take fye photos of them. So I began teaching myself more about the art.
Who inspires your style of shooting today?
Currently just inspired by my friends, like Dennis (ddesigns), Steve (stevesweatpants), and many more. They keep me on my toes and always make some hot shit.
God forbid, if you were to pass away today, what would you want to be remembered for?
Shit man, I don’t know. Does it really matter? I’m dead. But if I had to choose, it’d likely just be something regarding my work. I don’t really see myself in a place where I’d be remembered for anything yet. Working on it though!
Who are some of your favorite artist to listen to while shooting?
It depends on the mood of the shoot. Playlists ranges from Uzi to Snoh Aalegra to Tay K to Frank Ocean.
Are there any projects you look back on thinking you could have done things differently?
Literally all of them. I’m rarely ever able to look back at my old work and acknowledge it as good. It’s a blessing and a curse, honestly.
I see that you’re into anime. In your opinion give me your top 5 anime’s and why.
Realistically, my top 5 would include: 1. HxH 2. Naruto 3. Tokyo Ghoul 4. Berserk (only the golden arc trilogy) 5. Akame Ga Kill. Fun fact: I cried at the end of HxH and AGK.
Are you a gamer? If so what games have you been playing the most in 2018, and what games are you looking forward to?
I don’t game much anymore. I wish I did but I usually spend most of my time editing or watching YouTube videos now. Ironically, if I’m not watching a tech video, it’s a gameplay video.
What are your essential items you take with you when shooting and why?
The only item I *need* is my light meter. Gotta make sure I can get my proper settings when I’m using my RB67 since it doesn’t have one built in.
Where do you see your career going in 5 years?
Not sure. Hopefully I’m shooting more campaigns and branded content. Well, more than I am now. I’d be 27 so, I figure I’ll have most of my shit together by then if I continue at the rate I’m at now.
Have you ever been out of the country? If so do you think it has effected your work?
Yeah, I’ve been to Iceland, Rome, London, Monaco, Paris, and a few other places. I don’t particularly think it’s had any major effect on my work. Probably because I’m not a landscape photographer? I’m not sure. I just enjoy taking in new cultures and getting some fresher air than what we have here in the city.
